August 21, 2025 by raju ginni

Responsibility involves TGSPDCL, government, and cable providers. The court and HRC are also involved.

On August 18, 2025, a tragic electrocution incident occurred during a Krishna Janmashtami procession in Ramanthapur, Hyderabad. A chariot, while being pulled manually after its vehicle broke down, came into contact with a low-hanging live wire from an 11 KV high-tension power line. This resulted in the deaths of six devotees and injuries to four others.

Responsibility for the Ramanthapur Tragedy:

Ramanthapur Electric Shock Incident

The Ramanthapur electrocution tragedy has led to widespread calls for accountability.

  • Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL): Reports indicate that complaints about unsafe, dangling wires had been ignored. The Telangana Human Rights Commission (HRC) has taken suo motu cognisance, citing gross negligence and a lapse in public safety measures by the authorities, which they view as a violation of the right to life. The HRC has directed TGSPDCL to submit a report detailing the cause, responsibility for unattended wires, and long-term safety measures.
  • Government and Civic Authorities: The Telangana High Court has questioned the government, GHMC, and service providers regarding accountability. The court stated that “Everyone is responsible for the Ramanthapur incident.” The IT Minister announced an ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh for the deceased’s families and ordered an inquiry to identify those responsible.
  • Cable Operators/Service Providers: While the TGSPDCL claims to have issued notices to cable operators, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has criticized the indiscriminate cutting of cables, noting that internet cables do not carry electricity. However, the TGSPDCL’s counsel argued that the number of cables exceeded permitted limits, creating hazards.

Hyderabad Internet Issues:

density of cable wires to electric poles

Following the Ramanthapur tragedy and another electrocution incident the next day, the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) initiated a drive to remove dangling internet and cable TV wires from electricity poles across Hyderabad. This action, aimed at public safety, caused widespread internet disruptions, affecting work-from-home setups and digital payments. The indiscriminate cutting of cables by TGSPDCL has been criticized by the COAI and public, leading to protests and a standoff between the government and telecom industry. The Telangana High Court is also hearing a petition challenging the state government’s directive to disconnect cables.
